Fascism was a political regime instituted by Benito Mussolini in Italy after the end of World War I and was characterized by dictatorship and totalitarianism, aggressive nationalism, militarism and imperialism, the cult of the chief, anti-communism, repression and corporatism. To put its principles into practice, the one-party regime was set up in Italy, the individual rights of citizens were ignored, Parliament was transformed into a simple advisory body, the political police were set up and the opposition was subjected to often violent repression. . Fascism served as a model for several other dictatorships that were established in Europe in the period between the two World Wars, including the Salazarist dictatorship, which is why fascism came to designate any right-wing totalitarian dictatorship.
