Department of History, School of History, Religions & Philosophies

This is a vibrant, highly motivated, and outward-looking Department which boasts unparalleled expertise on the histories of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. We approach those histories by focusing on a range of topics, including culture, religion, gender, economics, law, politics, technology, and warfare.

Our historians are world-leading specialists on areas of the globe which comprise more than three-fifths of the world&rsquos population: colleagues work on the Middle East from the era of the Crusades to the more recent past, on nineteenth- and twentieth-century China and Japan, on the formation of state and society in Africa, and on Islam from West Africa to Southeast Asia.

The History Department also prides itself in having internationally acclaimed expertise in the study of ancient Near Eastern languages, including Akkadian, Sumerian and Hittite. Courses on these are offered as part of degree programmes taught in collaboration with the School of Archaeology of University College.

Our range of programmes at BA, MA and PhD level attract growing numbers of students every year, who come to the History Department to gain access to our unique research community, and to the insights we offer on the making of the modern world.

Through my SOAS experience, I have realised that as long as I am eager to learn, I don’t have any limits.

The best advice I can give is to just dive into the experience without any hesitation. Going into my study abroad experience, I didn’t expect to travel to Morocco and have the opportunity to see Roman ruins or eat chip butties (chips on a bun with sauce), but I did.

Studying history at SOAS has been an immersive experience unlike any other. The teaching has been passionate and engaging with a level of expertise hard to find elsewhere. It has encouraged us to constantly challenge the dominant narratives and developed our critical faculties. The student body is diverse and this adds to the discussions and perspectives in the classroom, enriching the learning environment.

If I were to describe SOAS in one sentence it would say that you will hear at least six different languages on the same day while you casually walk through the corridors of the university.

SOAS is unique but incredibly inclusive. Everyone fits in somewhere, and your perspective is valued by fellow students and lecturers, who are all eager to absorb what you have to say.

SOAS's history department also attracted me because of their continued recognition for staff-student ratio and the high quality research that is carried out in the department.

One of the biggest privileges I have found studying in the UK is the freedom to research the topics I choose a situation, which is not always a guaranteed right in other countries.

The BA History Combined Honours Degree combines History with another discipline or language and takes 3 or 4 years depending on the subject involved.

From the Crusades to the contemporary Middle East the Mughal Empire to Gandhi slavery to Muslim societies in West Africa, History at SOAS offers its students a unique window on the world in order to develop your understanding of the fascinating histories relating to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Students will also engage in subject matters ranging from economics, religion and culture to frontiers, cities, and gender. The two-subject degree additionally allows you to create a specialist niche for yourself within a specific regional, cultural or disciplinary context.

Students take 120 credits per year composed of Core and Optional modules.

This Joint Honours programme enables students to design their own intellectual journey, whilst maintaining a strong grasp of the fundamentals of History.

When selecting modules, some students choose to focus mainly on one region (Africa, Near and Middle East, South, Southeast or East Asia) or topic (e.g. Islam, violence and warfare, gender, modernity).

Others choose to range more broadly, exploring various topics and regions. Depending on the choice of the second subject, students will have the opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge of one particular region or to put more emphasis on the exploration of particular themes and problems, exploring them in a comparative context.

Contact hours

Modules are taught through a combination of lectures and tutorials, usually one hour a week of each. Sometimes, one follows the other in a two-hour bloc. Sometimes, the tutorial is at a different time or on a different day than the lecture.

Tutorials are sessions in which students are expected to present reports and take a lead in discussions.

Depending on the size of the class, some intermediate and advanced level modules are less strictly divided between a formal lecture and a tutorial discussion, and instead, the topic is briefly introduced by the lecturer, followed by a seminar discussion. Advanced level modules, which are usually taught in one two-hour bloc, often take this format.

Introductory modules

These are assessed through a combination of essays, oral presentations on selected readings or topics and a three-hour examination, taken in Term 3. Introductory modules are not open to second- and third-year history students.

Intermediate level modules

These provide specialised study in the history of particular regions, building on the introductory courses. With the exception of the Group Study Project (see below), they are assessed by: (a) two or three essays, and (b) a three-hour examination, taken in Term 3.

For intermediate modules the weighting of assessment between essays and examination varies, with coursework essays counting for between 25 per cent and 60 per cent of the total mark. For the specifics of each module see the individual module unit listings. Group Study Projects are assessed on the basis of three written reports (see below).

Advanced level modules

These aim to introduce students to the reading and use of original historical documents, so-called &lsquoprimary sources&rsquo. The 300 level modules are taught modules, assessed in the same way as intermediate level modules, i.e., a varying combination of essays and a final examination. For each 300 level module there is an attached 400 level module, for which there are no additional classes and which involves the writing of a 10,000-word dissertation on a topic arising from the content of the 300 level module. There is no final examination for 400 level modules assessment is on the basis of the dissertation alone.

The Independent Study Project (ISP)

These can be taken by final-year students only. Like the Special Subject dissertation, its aim is to provide an opportunity for students to conduct original historical research on their own initiative, to engage in in-depth analysis of particular subjects and to use a range of primary historical sources. It too involves no formal classes and is assessed by a single 10,000-word dissertation (including notes but excluding bibliography).

1940 to 1945 - World War II

The University buildings suffered bomb damage, notably the Great Hall. Post-war reconstruction work would be completed in 1953.

1946 - A period of expansion begins

The Institute began a period of expansion that would set the stage for its transition into City University London in 1966. Between 1946 and 1956 the number of courses grew, student numbers increased and academic research became more important, as faculty members were given the chance to take research leave from teaching and appoint research assistants.


MA History (2021 entry)

MA History is designed for students with a keen interest in studying the remote as well as the more recent past of the countries, peoples, and cultures of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. It is also ideal for students who seek to understand the historical conditions of the contemporary world from a global perspective.

While the course is open to students with backgrounds in a diverse range of disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the ideal applicant would have an UG degree in History or a relevant area studies programme, some knowledge of foreign, in particular Asian or African languages, and preferably relevant background in the region of specialism.

For History we are 11th in the UK (QS World University Rankings 2021) and 45th in the World (QS World University Rankings 2021).

This is one of the few Master-level programmes in History focusing on the study of Asia, the Middle East and Africa in the UK. With its high concentration of expertise of these regions, SOAS can offer an unrivalled breadth of courses on their histories. Apart from the possibility of acquiring regional expertise, the programme also provides a sound training in the historical sciences more generally.

A broad range of courses is available in every single year (see 'Structure' tab for more details), though you may want to contact the programme convenor to ask about the availability of particular courses in a particular year. Those who wish to further develop their linguistic skills may choose from a range of African and Asian language courses.

In addition to their studies on the MA programme, students at SOAS have the opportunity to participate in the Regional History Seminars, as well as in a wide range of research seminars, lectures and conferences, which regularly take place in different departments and centres across the School and at other colleges of the University of London.

Learn a language as part of this programme

Degree programmes at SOAS - including this one - can include language courses in more than forty African and Asian languages. It is SOAS students’ command of an African or Asian language which sets SOAS apart from other universities.

Students in this programme take four units of taught courses plus a 10,000 word dissertation with a detailed 2,500 word dissertation plan worth 10% of this mark. The proximity to the School of many archive depositories and records offices, including its own archival collection as well as the British Library, greatly enhances the potential for dissertation work.

Teaching is generally by informal lectures and seminar discussions. At Masters level there is particular emphasis on seminar work where students may be expected to make full-scale presentations for units they take.

In addition to their studies on the MA programme, students at SOAS are able to participate in a wide range of research seminars, lectures and conferences that regularly take place in the School and in the University of London.

Dissertation

The 10,000-word Dissertation with a detailed 2,500 word dissertation plan worth 10% of this mark on an approved topic linked with one of the taught courses.

Queer History Through Film

Film offers a unique access point into queer histories across the twentieth century. Using film as a source presents several angles through which to understand queer lives and experiences:

  • We see what understandings of homosexuality/queerness/gender diversity had particular resonance at particular historical moments and in specific historical contexts.
  • Film illuminates commercial relationships with homosexuality and queerness as well as the regulatory structures in place for its discussion.
  • When examining representations of homosexuality and queerness on film, we must consider not only producers, but also consumers/audiences, including queer audiences who may have found validity in visibility, pushed back against homophobic representations, or even used film subversively.

Taken together, and studied in the context of particular historical moments in twentieth-century history, this module explores not just histories of LGBTQ people, but of societies more broadly.


Explore the events, forces, and ideas that have shaped modern and international history with this fascinating three-year degree.

You will develop a strong understanding of major political, cultural, social and economic forces that have shaped the world, and will learn about a wide array of societies and cultures.

  • Study topics ranging from Conflict in world history to the United States in the twentieth century, and Digital storytelling to Women in popular music
  • Gain experience in the tools and techniques of historical research and engage in independent research projects of your own choosing
  • Learn from research-active academic experts in British, European, Asian, American, Russian, transnational and global history
  • Broaden your expertise with elective modules from City&rsquos respected courses in international politics, sociology, English, journalism, psychology, and creative and cultural industries
  • Prepare you for a wide range of postgraduate study and career options in areas such as publishing, the cultural sector, museums and heritage, consultancy, and public policy
  • Develop vital skills such as independent research, teamwork, critical thinking and analytical reasoning, leadership, time-management, and written and oral communication.

Historical Controversies

This module introduces students to a range of historical controversies in order to engage them in a critical manner with competing perspectives on a range of different issues and events. The module will contain six three-week blocks on various sub-disciplines within history, including, social, cultural and political history, across different periods and geographic areas. Throughout, it will focus on work on historiography, considering issues such as: the influence of issues contemporary to authors on their writing the impact of authors’ politics and/or wider values system on their work the evolution of controversies over time and theoretical explanations of controversies. In addition, it will take a comparative approach to controversies, with student assessment including an option to compare two historical controversies or to analyse one controversy in more depth. Lectures and seminars at the beginning and end of the module, and at the point of handover from one block to another, will discuss comparative themes. The History Department will publish a list of six blocks each year, from at least the following:

  1. Acts, Identities and the Origins of Homosexuality
  2. The Causes of the Russian Revolution
  3. The Greatest Whodunit in History: Who Caused the First World War?
  4. The Decline of the Liberal Party in the UK and the Rise of Labour
  5. Guilty Men? British Appeasement Policy and the Causes of the Second World War in Europe.
  6. The Ballot or the Bullet? Civil Disobedience in 1960s Protest Movements
  7. Revolutionary Movements in Latin America in the 1960s and 1970s
  8. Fire in Babylon: The New Cross Fire and the Black People’s Day of Action
  9. The Unnatural Disaster of Hurricane Katrina

Our courses are modern and UK focused, but there are many opportunities to study European, American and imperial history as well. We have particular expertise in the extraordinary history of London.

From our West End location you will explore the streets of the capital, learn how to conduct your own research in London’s archives, and graduate as a well-trained and experienced historian.

Our graduates enter careers such as the media, education and the Civil Service as well as going on to research or further study.
